Condition
Moyamoya Disease
Moyamoya disease is a process where arteries in the brain narrow over time and eventually block off. The brain compensates by creating small blood vessels to provide blood flow around this area of narrowing. The small blood vessels are fragile and can sometimes burst, causing bleeding within the brain. Other times, the amount of blood supplied by the small blood vessels is insufficient, and part of the brain dies due to lack of blood supply, which is a type of stroke.
Treatments
for Moyamoya Disease
Bypass Surgery
Treatment for Moyamoya disease consists of surgery to create blood flow around the area of narrowing. This surgery is usually done by taking an artery from the scalp or muscle from the scalp and diverting its blood supply to the brain. These techniques are referred to as indirect or direct bypass.
