Condition
Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)
Treatments
Resection
Some arteriovenous malformations can be treated with surgical resection. This procedure is an open surgery where the malformation is carefully removed from the brain and detached from the surrounding normal blood vessels.
Embolization
Other arteriovenous malformations can be treated with embolization. This procedure is an endovascular technique where an artery is accessed in the groin or wrist, and a catheter is navigated into the arteriovenous malformation. The malformation is then blocked from the inside using a glue-type substance.
Gamma Knife
A significant number of arteriovenous malformations are treated with Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery. This surgery is usually a one-time treatment where the patient is placed inside a machine similar to a CT scan. A focused, targeted amount of radiation is then given to the arteriovenous malformation. The lesion will then shrink over time and eventually disappear.
